Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the Q Academy student clinic?

Q Academy is a massage and myotherapy training college. We offer courses in HLT42021 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy, HLT52021 Diploma of Remedial Massage and 22316VIC Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy. All students completing one of our Nationally Accredited courses are required to complete a set number of supervised practical training hours, in order to obtain their qualification.

To help our students achieve the required hours set in the national training package, Q Academy has established a professional student clinic. The student clinic is a workplace simulated environment, where our students perfect and refine their skills learned throughout their course. Our students are fully supervised by their course coaches who are qualified therapists and trainers and assessors. The student clinic is what helps our students become confident, world-class massage and myotherapists.

How can I make a booking?

We recommend that you download the free ‘Q Academy’ App, available on Apple and Google Play stores. Make sure you download the App for your preferred clinic location:

What is the difference between relaxation, remedial and myotherapy?

A Relaxation treatment is often described as a general massage and will primarily include Swedish massage elements. It is a calming treatment that focuses on reducing client stress and anxiety, relieving tightness, improving circulation, sleep, flexibility and can incorporate Thai style techniques, stretches and reflexology.

A Remedial treatment is more advanced, with the student having a higher level of training and greater understanding and application of functional anatomy. The treatment is focused on identifying and treating musculoskeletal dysfunctions, which means finding the cause of complaints such as headaches, neck pain, chronic back pain, or joint pain and correcting any dysfunctions.

A Myotherapy Treatment is our most advanced treatment option available, utilising many of the same techniques as Physiotherapists. In a Myotherapy treatment your therapist will use soft-tissue techniques similar to Remedial and Relaxation, but if suitable, can also include Dry Needling, myofascial cupping, TENs techniques, strapping and taping, exercise prescription and injury rehabilitation. It is likely that your Myotherapist will spend some time including or discussing exercises in your treatment, to suit your condition and lifestyle, and to help manage and improve your condition.

How much is the student clinic?

As your therapist is still in-training, treatments are offered at a discounted rate of $40 an hour, or $70 for 2 hours from our Student Clinics.

Who will I be treated by?

You may be treated by student therapists at varying stages throughout their course. Whether it is their first day in the student clinic, or their last day before graduation – your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

What are the facilities like?

Our Student Clinic is a training facility. For your privacy and comfort we have established private clinic bays, separated by medical-grade curtains – similar to what you would find in a hospital. This means that noise may carry while our supervisors monitor each of the treatments and move throughout the clinic. We appreciate that this may be disruptive for some, which is why we try and offset this with our affordable prices, while still maintaining a high quality, professional level of treatment.

What if I have feedback for my therapist?

As this is a learning environment, your feedback is most welcomed. At the end of your treatment you will be given a feedback form, which we encourage you to complete and return to your therapist. This will help your student therapist adapt and improve their treatments.

Are students paid in the student clinic?

The Clinic has been established to facilitate the national training requirement that students complete a set number of supervised training hours in order to receive their qualification. Think of our Clinic as workplace training and experience, similar to students studying nursing or other healthcare qualifications. The fee we charge is to cover the associated costs to run and maintain a professional level of service. Only our qualified and experienced supervisors are paid for their time spent managing the Student Clinic.

Once students have graduated, acquired association membership, health fund provider numbers for private healthcare rebates, and no longer require supervision – we can employ them through our Professional Clinic service.

What should I expect with my treatment?

At the beginning of your treatment, you will be asked to complete a health history form. Your therapist may ask you some questions and will likely discuss your responses with you. This will help your therapist build a personalised treatment plan. During this time you may like to discuss with your therapist how much pressure you enjoy in your treatments, whether your treatment is relaxation, remedial or myotherapy our students have the skills to provide a soft or extremely firm treatment.

If you have booked a Relaxation Massage, you will spend the first 5-10 minutes of your treatment discussing any areas of concerns or discomfort with your therapist. Your therapist will then share with you their suggested treatment plan, with the following 45 minutes spent on the table. We encourage students to spend the final 5 minutes of the treatment offering home care suggestions (e.g. stretches or exercises) and preparing for their next appointment.

If you have booked our more advanced Remedial or Myotherapy treatments, at the beginning of your treatment you will go through a more extensive consultation process. This can include functional assessments and some specific tests which relate to your symptoms or area of focus for your treatment. Please allow up to 10-20 minutes for this process to take place. You will then spend up to 40 minutes on the table, generally receiving a variety of manual therapy techniques as agreed upon by you and your therapist.

Myotherapy treatments can also involve dry needling, myofascial cupping, TENs techniques or taping if you and your therapist agree that this is appropriate. Your therapist will then spend the final 10-15 minutes of your treatment reassessing areas treated and showing you a mobility, stability or strengthening exercise to complete on your own to manage and improve your condition.

What is a health history form?

A health history form is a legal requirement for therapists and clinics to record and maintain relevant details of our clients health and treatments. The recording of these details helps therapists to provide continued specific treatments for each individual and monitor progress and outcomes of the treatments provided. We do require a different Health history form for relaxation, remedial and myotherapy appointments as there are different considerations for each type of treatment. This can be completed using our online platform, Therapiax. Your therapist will include their treatment plan(s) and notes within this online platform to assist planning for follow up treatments and communicating with other therapists treating the same individual. The details you provide will remain private and confidential.

What is a treatment plan?

Your first treatment will generally involve working with your therapist to identify your symptoms and areas of concern. Your therapist will consult both you and their supervisor, the suggested plan to address and help improve your current situation. Before your therapist begins physically treating you, they should explain the treatment plan, techniques, effects and allow you to ask questions or make suggestions.

Towards the end of your first treatment, your therapist will discuss your ongoing treatment plan. They will identify how often they recommend between follow-up appointments and expected timeframes for progression.

What should I wear to my treatment?

We simply recommend that you come as you are. For most treatments, depending on your level of comfort, clients will be asked to undress to their underwear. Be assured that utmost care is always taken with draping, to maintain client comfort and discretion throughout the treatment. Any suggestive or inappropriate conduct will absolutely not be tolerated.

Do I have to arrive early for my treatment?

We ask that you plan to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment. This will give you time to park, check-in with reception, complete your health history form, and make payment for your treatment.

Can I get a health fund rebate?

You will not be eligible for Private Healthcare rebates in our Student Clinic. However, if you choose to make a booking in our Professional Clinic, depending on your cover, it is likely that you will be eligible for a rebate.

Associations are the primary regulators the Massage Industry and set the code of conduct and professional recommendations for their members. They consult with Government organisations and other professional organisations on behalf of Massage Therapists to increase recognition of massage as a complementary and allied service. Associations also offer support and guidance to therapists, to keep them up-to-date with industry changes and regulations, assist with employment advice, limited legal advice, and can offer therapists discounts on obtaining insurance. Please ensure that the qualification you intend to study will allow you to join your preferred Association. Q Academy recommends ANTA, AMT and MMA, with whom you will be eligible to become a member if you have one of our qualifications.
