Understanding Remedial Massage and Myotherapy

Improved physical and mental well-being this can be achieved with a simple remedial massage or a more complex myotherapy session. But what really are these two and how do they differ?

If youre considering a career in the massage industry, youll need to be familiar with these popular forms of physical therapy. Lets take a look at each of them closely.

Remedial Massage

This is done to decrease and eliminate muscle tension and provide muscle relaxation. Though generally only making use of the therapists hands, maximum results can be achieved by using various techniques including trigger point, myofascial therapy, and lymphatic drainage. Through these techniques, blood supply is stimulated and toxin built-up can be fixed. This results to repaired muscle damages and released muscle tension.

The objective of therapists is not only to relieve the pain experienced by the patient, but also to identify the underlying cause of the condition to treat it and prevent future occurrences.

To become a certified practitioner, you would need to get a Certificate IV in Massage first, then enrol and pass a remedial massage course.

Myotherapy

This form of treatment is not limited to the use of hands. It also makes use of instrumented methods to correct movement imbalances and treat musculoskeletal function problems. Myotherapy involves other forms of therapy including muscle stretching, musculoskeletal alignment, cupping and dry needling. Prescriptive exercises and advice on health and fitness are also incorporated into the program.

Before starting the treatment, the myotherapist would need to conduct an in-depth health assessment of the patient. This includes a medical history review and a detailed physical examination. A test of the muscle and joint function would also be conducted. This is to determine the problem areas and identify their causes.

To become a myotherapist, you would need an Advanced Diploma in Myotherapy. But first, a Diploma of Remedial Massage is required to enrol in a myotherapy course.

These two treatments may differ, particularly in the techniques used, but they share one goal: to provide relief and offer treatment for muscle and joint pains and injuries and, as a result, help patients experience over-all good health and well-being.
